Getting There By Air

Hong Kong - Getting There By Air

The Hong Kong International Airport is the main airport in Hong Kong and one of the busiest in the world. It was built on the island of Chek Lap Kok by land reclamation and is also called the Chek Lap Kok Airport. Not only is the airport an important shipping center, it’s also a gateway for much of Asia. It serves 40 destinations in Mainland China alone.

The airport itself is operated by the Airport Authority Hong Kong and is the main hub for Cathay Pacific, Dragonair, Hong Kong Airlines, Hong Kong Express Airways and Air Hong Kong (a cargo line). It is also one of the Asian-Pacific cargo hubs for UPS Airlines. Travelers can literally connect to cities all over the world from Hong Kong. China Airlines and China Eastern Airlines have 18 flights to Hong Kong every day from 15 different cities. Virgin Atlantic, United and Air India also use Hong Kong as a stopover for flights that go from London to Sydney, Tokyo to Singapore and Ho Chi Minh City. In all, 90 airlines operate flights to more than 150 cities around the world. It is the 10th busiest airport in the world when it comes to passenger travel.

Travel time from London to Hong Kong takes 12 hours and 30 minutes. For those who need a connecting flight, travel time can take as long as 15 hours. From new York City, flight time is 14 hours and 40 minutes.

The airport is large but has attempted to take its size into consideration when it comes to helping travelers find their way around. It has moving walkways and an automated people mover, a driverless system that has 3 stations to offer fast transportation between the check-in area and the gates. These are free to use.

Ground transportation to and from the airport is offered in several ways. It is connected by the North Lantau Highway on Lantau Island. The cross-boundary coach bus terminal is located in Terminal 2. The new Lantao Bus, Discovery Bay Transit Services, Citybus, and Long Win bus have 25 routes available both to and from the airport and connect with different areas of Hong Kong. There are also 10 overnight buses. A popular and inexpensive option is the Citybus which costs HKS1 and takes passengers to the Tung Chung MTR Station. Additional coach services connect to Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, Guangzhou, and Dongguan.

Ferry services are also available from the airport through Sky Pier. Access to the ferry terminal is found before immigration in the airport for those arriving passengers and you have not been considered to have entered Hong Kong if you choose to depart on these. The ports served include Shekou, Shenzhen, Macau, Humen (Dongguan), Guangzhou, Zhongshan, Zhuhai, and Nansha.

The airport Express connects the airport with the central business district. This is a rail link offered by the Mass Transit Railway. It serves Hong Kong, Kowloon, and Tsing Yi and only takes 24 minutes to reach the station. Free shuttle services are offered from hotels and complimentary transfers to and from the MTR.

There are three different kinds of taxis that serve the airport. The Lantau taxis connect passengers with the rest of Lantau Island. Urban taxis connect with Kowloon, Hong Kong Island, Tseung Kwan O, Sha Tin, and Tseun Wan. They cannot travel to southern Lantau Island. The New Territories taxis connect with the New Territories but do not travel to the areas that are served by the Urban Taxis. Fares are metered.

Three hotels are located close to the airport. These are the Regal Airport Hotel, Novotel Hong Kong Citygate, and the Hong Kong Skycity Marriott Hotel which is connected to AsiaWorld Expo.
