Hong Kong - Hospitals
Although most reports regarding public hospitals in Hong Kong are good, there can still be lengthy wait times, crowds, and lack of efficiency. The doctors are well-qualified and the hospitals themselves are modern, but the majority of expats tend to visit private hospitals. The private hospitals usually have more personalized attention and an English speaking staff on hand. The most popular private hospitals for expats include:
40 Stubbs Road

1 Old Peak Road

Hong Kong Central Hospital
One Lower Albert Road, Central

Matilda and War Memorial Hospital
41 Mount Kellett Road, The Peak

If you call 999 for an emergency, you will be taken to the nearest public hospital. If you do not wish to be taken to a public hospital, then you must vocalize this. Some ambulances will only take patients to the closest location.
If you do decide to get private health insurance then it’s important to read the policy information. Although rates in public hospitals are a nominal charge of HK$100 a day, prices for an overnight stay at private hospitals in Hong Kong can be very expensive. At private hospitals, however, you can find longer visiting hours and treatment by your own private doctor.
The public hospitals in Hong Kong are modern and comparable to Western standards in terms of professional expertise and medical equipment. The public hospitals in Hong Kong are organized according to region so that all residents in all of the districts have access to different fields of care. The Hospital Authority of Hong Kong manages 41 public hospitals, 74 general out-patient clinics, and 49 specialist out-patient clinics. They are organized into seven hospital clusters according to their locations. The visiting hours are different between the various hospitals and even the different units. Most hospitals have visiting hours sometime around lunch and later again in the evening. Patients may only have 2 visitors at a time. Some of the private hospitals might have visiting hours that are more lenient.
As a private patient in a public hospital, you can use the excellent medical facilities yet not give up the comforts of a private room and good service. As opposed to the rate of HK$100 per day, as a private patient you would pay HK$2,000 - 4,000 per day. This rate will give you a single room or a bed in a two-bed room with attached bathrooms, a telephone, and a television. However, you will also pay for physician’s fees and any required treatment. While this is more expensive, it is still less expensive than staying at a private hospital.
Almost all of the hospitals have emergency rooms. It is important to keep in mind, however, that patients are seen in order of the severity of their case so it might take a long time to be seen. You can also see a family doctor at one of the clinics. This is essential if you are going to miss work due to illness. Most places of employment require a doctor’s note.
