Hong Kong - Renewable Energy
The Hong Kong Government has been using renewable energy for more than 20 years. The Sheung Shi slaughter houses uses solar water heaters and some of the swimming pools have been using it in Hong Kong for more than 30 years. Small-scale photovoltaic systems are being used to power automatic weather stations around Hong Kong. The Wanchai Tower, the Science Park and the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department Headquarters have all recently started using photovoltaic systems to generate electricity to supplement their traditional power supplies. There are future plans to expand the use of solar power, energy from waste and wind energy.
At The Electrical and Mechanical Services Department there are interactive educational displays on renewable energy in Kowloon Bay. The headquarters also has a 350kW photovoltaic installation on the rooftop. Here, solar energy is converted into electricity to supplement the building's main energy supply. The government hopes to see these in additional buildings in the future.

Residents are encouraged to install solar hot water heaters in their homes. Due to Hong Kong’s sunny weather, solar energy is plentiful. Your current water heater can be replaced with a new solar hot water heating system that is located on the rooftop of your building. There are licensed contractors to ensure that installment is safe and follows regulations. To install a solar water heater, you must have approvals from the Buildings Department, Lands Department and Water Supplies Department. The benefits of solar hot water heating are that it can save the environment and save money too. A solar water heater with a tank capacity of 200 L costs around HK$ 8000 with an installation fee of about HK$ $2000. Although the government is encouraging their use, their existence is fairly limited at the moment. There are a few companies in Hong Kong that sell solar water heaters. These include: EcoSmart Energy Management Company Limited, JA International, and 3Tech Corporate Ltd. Installing these systems are probably going to be more feasible if you are renting a house or own your own home in Hong Kong. Logistically, it’s more complicated to get an apartment building approved for the solar water heater than it would be to have one installed in your individual home. Additional companies that sell and install solar water heaters and solar panels include:

Wind energy is being explored in Hong Kong but is not currently widespread. There is a wind/solar hybrid system at the Shek Kwu Chau Drug Rehabilitation Centre and Hong Kong’s first commercial-scale combined PV and wind turbine renewable energy power station at 200kW capacity was built on Town Island. The Hong Kong Observatory started utilizing wind power as an energy source in some of its isolated automatic weather stations which were using solar power. Wind turbines offer an alternative back up source on days when it’s not sunny enough to produce solar power.
