Hong Kong (City) - Employment
Some foreigners are finding it harder to obtain a Hong Kong work permit. Foreigners wishing to work in Hong Kong must demonstrate that they have a special skill. Either that or the company hiring the foreigner must demonstrate that it cannot find a qualified candidate for the position in Hong Kong. Many expatriates gain their Hong Kong work permits by way of transfer from another country within the same company.
All employees are entitled to public holidays. Domestic helpers are also entitled to the 12 statutory public holidays.
Recently, a Mandatory Provident Fund (MPF) was introduced in Hong Kong. All employees are required to contribute a percentage of their salary to MPF, which will be invested and repaid to expatriates (plus/minus gains or losses) when expatriates leave Hong Kong permanently. For more information on the mandatory provident fund, visit www.info.gov.hk.
