Healthcare and Medical Treatment

Delhi - Healthcare and Medical Treatment

Delhi is the hottest medical tourism destination in the world. Owing to world class doctors, infrastructure and low costs, many people from around the world prefer to come to Delhi for treatment. Delhi has trained medical professionals, doctors, nurses and all other paramedic staff to take care of its patients. There are many good hospitals like the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Apollo Hospitals, Fortis Hospitals and many more, which provide medical care, diagnosis facilities, physiotherapy and surgical facilities. Almost all departments such as Orthopaedics, Paediatrics, Gynaecology, Radiology, Cardiology, Neurology, Medicine, Dental, ENT, Health and Nutrition etc take good care of patients admitted in their hospitals. Most of these hospitals also have research facilities. AIIMS tops the list.

There are some excellent doctors and dentists in Delhi, who go for post-medicine studies to the US, Australia or the UK, and gain the necessary expertise from there. Most of these doctors are consultants to the best hospitals and also have their own private practice. One can obtain their Nursing Homes' or Clinics' phone numbers and addresses. One can look for a doctor with an MD in medicine or an MS in surgery to his name. It is best to visit a doctor near to your residence in case of emergency or general sickness and then switch to someone else, if need persists. However, it is also advisable to go for a second opinion before deciding on any major surgery or treatment because of the wide range of technology and treatments available.

India does not hold a high rank in healthcare in the UN Human Development Index, but a series of private hospitals has made the country one of the most sought-after medical destinations in Asia. From complicated heart surgeries to simple cataract removal operations, tens of thousands of people travel to Indian cities from neighbouring countries, and even from as far as the Middle East and Africa, seeking cheap, effective treatment.

A number of government hospitals are doing an equally good job in catering to the needs of local people, so expats can opt to go to big private hospitals.

One of the biggest players in the field is Apollo, with 30 hospitals across the country, which has treated 54,700 patients from 55 countries in 20 years. The group says it takes care to make its foreign patients feel at home. Its Hyderabad hospital, for instance, prepares special food for foreigners and makes available translators for patients who can't speak English. Apollo Hospital in Delhi is on Mathura road in South Delhi. The cost factor involved in any of these hospitals in Delhi is about one-tenth that of an average hospital in the West.

NCR has good hospitals too, but the majority of people come to hospitals in Delhi for more serious treatment. However, more private hospitals like those of Fortis and Max Healthcare are establishing their facilities in Noida and Gurgaon to cater to the rising population in these areas.

Delhi offers a lot of medication in traditional Ayurveda that cures people using medicinal herbs. German homeopathy medicines are also available and doctors specializing in homeopathy can cure those with dependency issues.
