Getting There

Tokyo - Getting There

For an overall guide on Japan's accessibility, refer to www.expatfocus.com/expatriate-japan.

Most expatriates flying in from international flights to Tokyo will arrive at the Narita International Airport (Tel: +81 (0) 476-34-8000). Some international flights (mostly from Korea) arrive at the Haneda Airport (Tel: 03-5757-8111). The Haneda Airport is the center of domestic flights (and some international/charter flights), and is about 1 ½ hours away by rail from the Narita International Airport. A useful pdf guide on Narita Airport and its cargo facilities, including maps, is available for download here.

When scheduling your arrival, note that both the Narita International Airport and the Haneda Airpot are located at least an hour away from central Tokyo itself. The Narita International Airport is located about 60 km away from Tokyo. It would be helpful to plan in advance your land transfer from the airport to your final destination.

From the airport, there are a few options to get to Tokyo – the more popular (and less expensive) choices are by bus or rail, if you are familiar with the bus / rail system. For real-time information on rail/bus schedules, click here. If you are traveling by train or bus and would like to travel light, there is a luggage delivery service available at the Narita airport that can deliver your luggage to your destination. The charge per piece is Y2000 up to 30 kg.

Be prepared to pay a few hundred dollars if you choose to travel by taxi. There are fixed fare taxies, whose rates start from Y15,000 (additional surcharges, such as tolls and night charges, apply). You can also make prior reservations for private limousine transfers from the airport to your destination. These services come with English-speaking guides, and are practical for expatriates traveling with extra luggage and passengers.
