Getting There by Air

Malaysia - Getting There by Air

Kuala Lumpur International Airport

The busiest and most well connected airport in Malaysia is Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL). There are direct flights from London to Malaysia, but most only have one stop, usually in either Hanoi, Jeddah or Dubai. Similarly there are no direct flights from New York, these usually have one stop in Hong Kong, but you can fly direct from Los Angeles. It is not possible to contact Kuala Lumpur Airport in general, if you have any questions, it is best to visit their website www.klia.com.my, or phone one of the airline companies which are based there. The contact numbers for a few of the airlines based at Kuala Lumpur Airport are detailed at the bottom of this section.

Flights from the UK

Flying from London can take anywhere from 12.5 hours to 33 hours, depending on whether or not they are direct and on how long you have to wait in between connecting flights. It doesn’t necessarily follow that the shorter flights are more expensive, so make sure that you check the total journey time before completing the transaction. Malaysia Airlines do offer a direct service between London Heathrow and Kuala Lumpur Airport and this takes 12 and a half hours. The direct flights from London tend to cost around £100 more than ones with one stop along the way.

Flights from the US

New York

There are no direct flights from New York to Kuala Lumpur but most only have one stop. They can take any length of time between 21 and 31 hours. A lot of the slightly more expensive flights take a lot longer to arrive, so make sure that you read all of the details before booking your flight.

Los Angeles

Malaysia Airlines again offers a direct flight from LAX to Kuala Lumpur. This is amongst the very cheapest flights that you can purchase but is the only direct one. The direct flight takes 20 hours but there are many others which stop in Hong Kong and don’t take much longer at all.

Onward Travel

Kuala Lumpur International airport is situated about 60 kilometres (40 miles) from the capital city itself. There is a high speed railway which connects the airport to the city’s main train station, and from there you can get a train to other towns and cities in the country.

Car Hire

Most of the car hire firms are open quite long hours, but you will struggle to find one that is open if you arrive in the airport after 10pm. This is another consideration to take into account when booking your flight. If arriving at your final destination requires you to hire a car then you will need to arrive in Kuala Lumpur when the offices are open.

Although Kuala Lumpur is the most well connected airport in Malaysia, there are more international airports which are often great for travelling to counties which are a shorter distance away.

East Malaysia

If you are travelling to East Malaysia, then you can get a direct flight from Kuala Lumpur Airport straight into Kota Kinabalu. The connecting flight takes about 2 and a half hours and is very cheap. If you book Kota Kinabalu as your final destination it will usually increase your total flight time by about 4.5 hours (allowing for you to change in Kuala Lumpur) but there will be very little, if any, difference in the price. There are not many long haul international flights which land in Kota Kinabalu airport so it is usually easiest to change at Kuala Lumpur.

National Airlines

Malaysia Airlines is the country’s national airline, and it offers many flights around Asia in particular. Whilst they do offer a wide range of choice on destinations and timings, you will find that Air Asia and Firefly flights are often much cheaper.
