Malta - Communications (Telephone, Post, Internet, TV, Radio)

Maltacom is the major provider of telecommunication services in Malta, and applications for a telephone or internet service are available on its website (http://www.maltacom.com). ISDN and broadband services are available. There are a number of mobile phone networks providing good coverage across Malta. Public telephone booths can also be found across the islands.

There are good national and international postal services, operated by Maltapost (http://www.maltapost.com).

Malta has a range of daily and weekly Maltese and English language newspapers. Traditionally, many of these have had strong political affiliations. The main daily English language newspapers are The Malta Independent and The Times. Other English newspapers include The Malta Business Weekly, The Malta Independent on Sunday and the Sunday Times.

Since the early 1990s commercial broadcasting has been allowed in Malta and there has been a proliferation of privately owned radio stations and a number of commercial TV channels. Prior to this, broadcasting was only allowed by the two main political parties and the Catholic church. Italian TV channels are also broadcast, and are very popular. Cable TV was introduced to Malta in the early 1990s, and satellite TV is watched in many households.
