Oslo could perhaps be the only city with such vast stretches of wilderness, (more than 240 sq. km) interspersed between bustling commercial and residential blocks. The 100 km long Oslo Fjord is the city's most visible landmark, and is lined with cruise ships and ferry boats facing 40 tiny islands off the shore. 343 lakes dot the city while the shipping docks that skirt the coastline are within easy reach from the city centre. A short walk ahead reveals the city's beaches beyond the rocky shores.

The most endearing feature of Oslo is its long stretches of ski runs and the eight alpine slopes within city limits.. The Holmenkollem Ski Jump is the hub for all the skiing championships hosted by Oslo on an international scale, including the Winter Olympics held in 1952. The Holmenkollen Ski Festival held every year is one of the several events held here and is attended by thousands. Lighted trails make possible slalom skiing, tobogganing and skating all through the icy winter months from December to March. The numerous skating rinks around the city too come alive around the same time.

Between spring and autumn, the Oslo Fjord is abuzz with water sports and sailing, windsurfing and angling. A cruise down the harbour, a walk through the forest and swimming are activities residents of Oslo actively engage in during the brief summer. The Marka forest circling Oslo is crisscrossed by innumerable trails running along the stream, ideal for jogging. Hovedoya Island is a favorite getaway for the Oslovians, known for its picturesque walking trails and a 12th century monastery.

Oslo's nightlife is charged with pubs like Sir Winston and Scotsman, and the Herr Nielson Jazzklub close to Stortinget. Other popular hangouts for youngsters include Smuget and 3 Brodre.

Expatriates in Oslo from common backgrounds do congregate and form associations of their own. The American Women's Club is one such, and they can be visited at www.awcoslo.org. The Filipinos too have a club at P.Lochmannsg.2 and can be contacted at +47 (22) 71 7235

The Petroleum Wives Club meets every month at the Hovik Church Hall. It is not restricted to wives of expats in the oil sector, and encompasses women from English speaking communities. The club has an interesting repertoire of activities throughout the year.

Expatriates from different nationalities meet at the International Forum Oslo to share common issues and develop a social network. The association meets at Kreditkasen (Nordea) on Middelthungsg.17, and can be contacted at +47 (22) 24 3513

The Rotary and Lions Clubs in Oslo also have sizeable membership from expatriates.
