All telecommunications services in Qatar are provided by the government-owned Qatar Public Telecommunications Corporation (Q-Tel).

Foreign nationals are required to hold a residence permit to have a telephone line installed in their residence, or to take over an existing line. It is necessary to make a special request for a line on which to make and receive international calls. International calls are relatively expensive, but local calls are free of charge, you are only charged for the line rental, at QR per month.

Q-Tel also provides a mobile phone network, using the GSM standard. The Q-Tel website provides details of the options available, including pre-paid services.

Details are also available on the Q-Tel website of the internet services available. Dial-up access is reportedly slow but reliable; DSL is a faster option, at a cost of around US$80 per month. It is possible to pay for hourly internet access without having an internet account.

Postal services are adequate, but there are no residential deliveries - you need to open a PO box for collection of your mail. There is a General Post Office in the West Bay area of Doha, and branch postal offices throughout the city and in other towns. Airmail to the UK and the US takes about a week.
