Vehicle Inspection, Maintenance, Repairs and Breakdown Recovery

Singapore - Vehicle Inspection, Maintenance, Repairs and Breakdown Recovery

Vehicles must obtain a safety and emissions inspection every other year starting in the third model year. After ten years, the inspection must be done on an annual basis. All vehicles are also subject to mandatory periodic inspections. When they get these inspections, emissions are tested to ensure that they comply with the regulations set forth by the Ministry of Environment. Since 1994, all gasoline-powered vehicles must comply with the exhaust emission standard as specified in either the European Directive 91/441/EEC (CED) or Article 31 of the Japanese Safety Regulations for Road Vehicles. To help comply with these standards, all gasoline-powered vehicles come with catalytic converters.

The Pollution Control Department (PCD) of the Ministry of the Environment takes strict enforcement actions to bar against smoky vehicles on the roads that could cause air pollution. The Vehicular Emissions Clause stipulates that it is an offence for anyone to use or permit the use of any vehicle that emits smoke on the road.

Individuals must ensure that their vehicle is in good working order before driving it. This responsibility includes seeing to its proper service, maintenance, and operations, as specified in the vehicle’s operational manual.

There are several certified vehicle inspection companies. These include:

STA: http://www.stai.com.sg

53 Pioneer Road Singapore 628505
Tel: 68639639

There are also several break-down services in Singapore as well. Automobile Association Singapore,AA(S), is one of the most popular. They will come to you and tow your vehicle, fix your flat tire, or provide you with another service if needed.

When you are looking at car insurance, you will want to understand your policy carefully. Some policies include the use of a rental or replacement vehicle while yours if being repaired. This can be helpful if you need your vehicle to get to and from work. Some policies do not offer this, however.

As well as keeping your vehicle in working order, keeping it clean is often a priority in Singapore, too. Car washes and detail services are available. Car grooming centers can include do-it-yourself services, such as washings and vacuuming, while others have a staff on hand that clean your vehicle for you. It is generally cheaper to clean your vehicle yourself, although a professional job is often more detailed and less time consuming. Some of the services available include thorough washings, paint restoration, polishing, gloss protection, vacuuming, tire dressing, and steam cleaning. Some of the car grooming centers offer membership rates which allow you multiple visits throughout the year for one cost that is usually cheaper than paying for the visits individually. Although it is not mandatory to have your vehicle cleaned, it is culturally frowned upon to have one that is not. Some of the car grooming centers in Singapore include:

Elite Auto Saloon
Esso Petrol Station
237 Whitley Road and 331 Bukit Timah Road

6 Cactus Road

Radianz Car Grooming Center
B1-02 Markoni District Centre
