Private satellite dishes are not allowed in Singapore. However, the international satellite broadcasters based in Singapore (including ABN, Discovery Asia, ESPN, HBO, MTV and Disney) are only using Singapore as an uplink station to beam to other markets and to local households via cable.
You must have a TV with PAL system. When you apply for a cable TV you also have to find out if your home is connected and how many cable points you need. Each TV set with cable connection must have its own Set Top Box which is rented from your cable TV provider. A deposit of S$250 is required of foreigners for cable service.
Singaporeans watch a lot of popular American television shows like “How I Met Your Mother,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” “The Walking Dead,” and reruns of “Friends.” Other popular shows are “Madame White Snake” and “The Unforgettable Memory” which airs out of Taiwan.
Individuals have to get a residential TV license as per The Media Development Authority. The license is S$110, and can be renewed on a yearly basis. If you do not get or renew a license then you can be fined of up to S$1,000. The property owner is usually responsible for the license so make sure you ask if this is your responsibility when you rent your place.
