Mobile phone service providers

The mobile phone business in Singapore is very competitive. There 3 main mobile phone service providers in Singapore – SingTel (Dial 1626 for local calls only), Starhub (Dial 1633) and M1 (Dial 1627) – all offer competitively-priced subscription plans for local and overseas calls. It is advisable to purchase a pay-per-use subscription with a local number – some subscriptions are pre-paid, while others are post-paid. Post-paid subscriptions can be bundled with attractive offers for new mobile phones and other discounts, but they require the signing of a 1 or 2 year contract. Early contract termination incurs heavy penalties. Check with your company if corporate discounts for new subscriptions are possible. To apply for a new mobile line, you will need to bring along your Employment Pass and Passport.

Broadband and Wireless Services

SingTel (Dial 1610 for broadband services and 1609 for fixed telephone and IDD services) and Starhub (Dial 1633 for all services) provide combined fixed telephone line and broadband services. Take note that there are fees for service activation, line rentals and call charges. Rates for international calls can vary as well.

Number portability is now possible – you can to switch from one service operator to another, as long as there is no existing contract. Pacnet (Tel: (65) 6336 6622) offers broadband services to corporate customers and individuals. Wireless@SG is a nation-wide wireless broadband initiative supported by the Singapore government that allows users to enjoy free indoor and outdoor wireless broadband connection in most public places.
