Getting There

South Africa - Getting There

Flying is really the only option when coming to South Africa. The adventurous can trek through the African continent and those with time on their hands can come by boat. For everyone else, well...

There are more than 700 airports in South Africa, though the gateway to the country is Johannesburg International Airport. South African Airways is the country's official carrier, but most major airlines (more than 70) have flights to and from Johannesburg International Airport on a regular basis. Some international flights do go directly to Cape Town or Durban, but the majority land in Johannesburg first and then use connecting flights to ferry passengers to their final destination.

Domestic flights are available on one of seven major carriers (two of which, Kulula and 1time are budget airlines) and connect this central hub to the rest of the country; there are airports at all major and a number of minor centers, including Cape Town, Durban, Port Elizabeth, George, and Nelspruit. These airlines all provide online ticket booking functionality.
