Sweden - Driving and Public Transportation
Non-EU/EEA nationals can drive for up to a year in Sweden on their existing licences, but after this they are required to pass a Swedish driving test. This consists of a practical test and a written theory test. A vision test is also required.
Applications for driving licences or exchange of driving licences should be submitted to the local office of the Swedish National Road Administration.
There is a well developed road network, which is well maintained and extends to all parts of the country. Highways connect the main settlements. Traffic is usually light, but wildlife such as reindeer and moose on the roads are a hazard in rural areas.
Sweden has a fast efficient public transport system throughout the country. There are several air carriers operating domestic flights throughout the country, and an extensive rail network also covers the whole country. High-speed modern trains are used on all main rail routes, with sleeper services on longer journeys. There are also express bus services operating between Sweden's cities and larger towns.
Within Sweden's cities there are well developed, fairly inexpensive public transport systems. It is possible to buy good value season passes in Stockholm giving unlimited travel on buses and the subway.
