Thailand - Getting There By Rail
Hat Yai railway station services as the most southerly major rail station in the Thai network. Both passenger and freight trains pass through this station and it is the only truly international station in Bangkok. There is a ticket office within the station and advance bookings can be made there. The station is located close to the city centre. Each day there are 5 trains that run between Bangkok and Hat Yai and there are 7 trains each day which travel on to Malaysia.
It is possible to travel via the Eastern and Oriental Express from Singapore to Bangkok. This journey takes 41 hours and is generally a leisurely journey. This is also fairly expensive, with average prices around $1200 but it does include excursions along the way including a trip to the River Kwai and a tour of the city of Penang.
Tickets can be booked with either the State Railway of Thailand or the Malaysian Railway network.
