Thailand - Salaries

There is a minimum wage structure in Thailand although this can vary depending upon the province. It should also be noted that if an employer hires a foreign worker (unskilled) they often do not feel obliged to pay the minimum wage. The minimum wage is based on a daily, rather than hourly rate. The current rate in the Prachum Khir Khan region, for example, is 172 THB per day. This is the equivalent of around £3.80 per day or $5.80 per day. The region of Phuket has one of the highest daily minimum rates at 221 THB and Bangkok has set its minimum at 215 THB per day. Regions around Bangkok have a similar rate.

Office workers will find that their salary varies according to the type of work that they are doing. A junior secretary will earn a minimum of 8000 THB per year if she has fewer than five years experience. With more experience, a person in a similar role will earn around 12,000 minimum, although secretaries and PAs who have a number of years experience and find themselves working for a strong company can earn anything up to 100,000 THB. A minimum rate for a customer service worker can be anything from 8000 to 20,000 THB depending upon the company but in a senior role with several years experience this could also rise to 100.000 THB. Those new to the medical profession can earn (depending upon the role) anything from 15,000 to 40,000 as a starting salary while after a few years experience this can rise to as much as 500,000 (senior consultants).

Engineering workers starting at the bottom should expect a salary of 10,000 THB, but after a few years this can be as much as 300,000 THB for those who make it to the top of the profession. Japanese speaking staff is often in demand by international companies and this can see salaries increase too, with some in senior positions earning up to 150,000 THB per year. Those who work in the financial sector can also expect to see a big difference between various roles. A new starter in accounts payable can expect an average yearly salary of 10,000 THB. A senior manager in the same department could earn in the region of 45,000 THB with several years experience. Senior accountants and finance managers can expect to earn around 150,000 THB per year.

Those who work as claims assessors in the insurance sector can expect to earn between 18,000 and 20,000 THB each year while claims managers who have been in the industry for a few years should expect a salary of between 45,000 and 60,000 THB. The highest salaries are reserved for those working as Risk Management managers, at an average of 90,000 THB.

IT workers are often in demand in Thailand and those who are starting out as a database administrator can expect an average starting salary of 25,000 THB. Website managers and content creators can earn up to 60,000 THB, although this is with several years experience in the industry. IT directors can earn up to 200,000 THB. Network engineers who are training can expect a starting salary of around 20,000 THB but with training and experience this can rise to 70,000 THB per month. Software programmers can expect a starting salary of around 15,000 when they are just starting out but senior programmers can earn up to 80,000 THB.

As already mentioned, higher rates are paid to workers who need to have language skills in addition to those required for the job.

Those who are working in unskilled positions can expect to earn salaries which are much lower than these mentioned and which are much lower than they could expect in the UK or the US. Unskilled positions tend to go to those with fewer qualifications or migrant workers. Skilled workers can expect much better salaries although those starting out in their chosen profession will find that the starting salary is lower than that paid in the UK or the US for a similar job. This is balanced out by the low cost of living in Thailand and the benefits come later as it is possible to earn more with qualifications and experience.
