Healthcare & Medical Treatment

Abu Dhabi - Healthcare & Medical Treatment

Expats in Abu Dhabi can expect high standards of medical services at both public and private hospitals. Both categories of hospitals are managed by the Health Authority of Abu Dhabi and charge similar fees. Public-private tie-ups have strengthened the health services in the city, with associations being formed with Cleveland and John Hopkins hospitals of the US.

There is no 'free' health care service except the one that is extended during an emergency.

Expats do not have to register themselves at a clinic on arrival in Abu Dhabi, but all foreign nationals and their families are covered by health insurance, as per laws of the Abu Dhabi government. The insurance and health cards are to be shown at the appointment with the doctor.

Emergency medical assistance is available on call at 998 and 999. Pharmacies are open throughout the week, with shorter working hours on Fridays. A number of mild drugs are sold over the counter in Abu Dhabi without a doctor's prescription, though some potently addictive drugs are difficult to come by.
