Iowa

United States of America (USA) - Iowa

Iowa is the 29th state of the United States of America. Located in the Midwest area of the country, Iowa is the 26th largest state in terms of area and 30th in terms of population. The state capital of Iowa is Des Moines which is also the largest city in the state. Other major cities within the state are Cedar Rapids, Davenport and Sioux City. Iowa is bordered by 6 other states: South Dakota, Nebraska, Missouri, Illinois, Wisconsin and Minnesota.

Iowa has a typical Midwest climate, humid but with differing extreme of temperature. Summers can be extremely hot, up to 38 degrees in some parts while winters can be as low as -18 degrees. Iowa sees more rain fall during the summer months compared to winter.

There are many things to see and do in Iowa including amusement parks and art festivals. Famous people from this state include John Wayne and Glenn Miller.

Iowa - Employment

Iowa does have an agricultural industry but it is relatively small part of the state’s economy. The state has strong manufacturing and finance sectors, and one of the state’s main employers is the local government. Iowa has managed to survive the economic problems quite well and unemployment has not risen like it has in other areas, remaining relatively low at below 7%.

Manufacturing in Iowa includes agricultural chemicals, food processing and machinery. There are a number of big-name companies in the state including Heinz, Quaker Oats, ALCOA and 3M. There are opportunities for both skilled professionals with qualifications and unskilled workers, although the competition is fierce for both types of work. There are several international banks in the state as well as insurance companies and there are always opportunities for those with experience in the area. Some international companies prefer to transfer foreign staff from their own offices abroad, rather than recruit them in the US.

Iowa - Property

Iowa has several cities which are attractive to expats coming to the state looking for work. Sioux City is one of the areas that has a multicultural community. The North Side is a residential area and is a mix of apartments and town houses. The area is reasonably priced and has a good schools system. Indian Hills is a district that has many residential homes, built from the 1960s onwards. This is a popular area as it is relatively inexpensive.

In contrast, the Country Club area is mainly mansions and homes built in a ranch style. These houses are expensive and usually come with a lot of land, but the area has everything that a family needs. Rose Hill is a district of large houses but is very reasonably priced. The area attracts those who like a bohemian lifestyle and there are many ethnic shops and restaurants to be found there. Gilman Terrace has everything families could need for daily life and is an inexpensive area that is ideally located for schools and other facilities.

The South Side of the city is home to the Morningside district, which is a mix of old and new neighbourhoods and though these are mainly residential there are some new commercial developments in the area, bringing work opportunities and a variety of businesses to serve the community. The prices in the area are reasonable and there are many properties available to rent as well as buy. Close to Morningside is the East End, which has a range of apartments and family homes for all budgets and tastes. The area is ideal for those who need to travel into the centre of the city daily.

The city of Cedar Rapids offers many opportunities for the newcomer with several districts that are very welcoming for expats. The Czech Village, for example, has a Czechoslovakian heritage, with architecture styles to reflect this as well as a number of businesses that are Czech-orientated, such as restaurants and manufacturing companies. There are a number of organisations for those with Czech heritage and there are many events throughout the year to bring the residents together. Properties are very reasonably priced and are mainly family homes.

The district of Kenwood in the northeast of the city is also a mainly residential community, with just enough shops and amenities for family life. The area has an excellent schools system and the city of Cedar Rapids has been regularly voted one of the best places in which to raise a family.
