Los Angeles - Education & Schools
High school dropout rates have increased significantly over the past few decades – nearly one third of students in the Los Angeles school district fail to graduate with their class. The Los Angeles Unified School District has instituted a plan to reduce the percentage of dropouts within its district, focusing on the education and involvement of parents as learning mentors.
Los Angeles schools are subject to national standardized testing, which helps the national government determine and rank the effectiveness of schools and districts.
You can find a list of kindergartens, elementary schools, junior highs, and high schools at the Los Angeles Unified School District website, www.lausd.net.
The city is also home to several well known universities, which enjoy high application rates not only because of the quality of the education they offer, but also because of the temperate climate of the area.
One of the best known universities in the city is the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA). This university offers a wide range of undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral programs in fields such as psychology, medicine, international business, social sciences, education, and many more. It also places a heavy emphasis on sports, including soccer, volleyball, gymnastics, water polo, and football.
You can find more information about UCLA’s campus, academic programs, sports, and more at www.ucla.edu.
California State University of Los Angeles also offers a variety of undergraduate and graduate programs. It also provides numerous venues for theater, fine arts, and music. The university has extensive support facilities for international students, and can help you navigate your way around college life in Los Angeles. You can learn more about their programs and services at www.calstatela.edu.
A third popular option for expats moving to Los Angeles is the University of Southern California (USC), which integrates liberal and professional learning to create a well rounded educational environment. Undergraduate programs are available in 17 different professional disciplines, as well as arts, theater, and music programs. It also offers over 120 undergraduate minor programs, to help students develop an educational background that will assist them both personally and professionally.
Graduate degree programs are available for a wide range of disciplines, including architecture, business, accounting, dentistry, and many others.
