Health Insurance in Los Angeles, and the rest of the United States, is not required. However, healthcare and prescription costs are relatively high. Many employers offer group health insurance as part of an employee benefits package. The cost of the plan is usually deducted from the employee's paycheck, but group healthcare plans generally offer lower rates and less exclusions than individual health plans.

If your employer does not offer health insurance, individual plans can be purchased through and insurance agency or directly from the health insurance carrier. Individual and family plans are typically more costly than group rates, but they can help you avoid accruing a larger debt if you are sick, injured, or hospitalized. Many plans provide prescription coverage as well. When purchasing an individual or family plan, shop around. It is also important to ask questions about any exclusions on prescription and healthcare coverage.

Many health care plans use a co-pay system. With this system, you will be asked to pay a small, generally pre-set, fee at if you visit a doctor’s office or emergency room.
