Who are you?
I am Egyptian and had lived in the USA for the past 26 years. I started my career as an educator and even became a California teaching candidate, then I decided to change my career to professional writing. This what I’m doing for a living in Egypt. Most of my clients are American, Canadian or from the UK and I’m marketing to prospective Egyptian clients right now.Where, when and why did you move abroad?
My final move to Egypt from California was last year, 2016. I moved to be closer to my relatives and Egyptian friends.
How did you find somewhere to live?
I rented an apartment (flat) by family members then found a nicer and bigger place through a realtor.
Are there many other expats in your area?
In Cairo, yes, but I think that many of them choose to live in newer living developments, like Madinty.
What is your relationship like with the locals?
Fine. I’m originally Egyptian and I’m fluent in Arabic, but as soon as I start speaking Arabic people look at me and say, you’re not from here are you? I have a California accent.
What do you like about life where you are?
My family is accessible and I can call Uber whenever I need a ride somewhere.
What do you dislike about your life there?
I don’t know many expats.
What advice would you give to anyone following in your footsteps?
Don’t aim for a pricey lifestyle from the get-go. Test the water first. If you can, come to Egypt for a vacation first (while living life as if you are home not on vacation) before you make a final move.
What are your plans for the future?
To grow my business.
