Driving and Public Transportation

Chile - Driving and Public Transportation

Chile has an excellent road network. Comfortable long distance buses are the easiest way to get around if you do not have a car and are very cheap. There is a very limited train service. Air service is excellent and reasonably cheap.

Most people arrive in Chile via Santiago at the country's main airport. People sometimes arrive in the South of the country or in Valparaiso whilst on organised tours or cruises.

Driving in Chile is not difficult. You drive on the right hand side of the road. Chilean drivers are not the best in the world and are very uncourteous but they generally obey the rules. Foreigners must have an International Driver's Permit until they obtain residency when they must apply for a local licence and undertake a multiple choice exam (translators are usually allowed).

Driving in Chile is cheaper than in Europe but more expensive than in the USA (fuel, insurance, road tax etc).
