Elderly Care

Dominican Republic - Elderly Care

The elderly in the Dominican Republic are treated in a different way to the developed world. There are very few nursing homes or elderly care facilities and those that there are tend to be for the expats as Dominicans would not dream of their elderly relatives being in any other place than the home. Although some children will leave the area where the family lives there will always be some children there to take care of the parents and once the parents are no longer able to live on their own then they will move in with the children or the children with them. The elderly will then become the matriarch or patriarch of the family and no decisions will be taken unless they are in agreement.

Life expectancy at 73 is lower than both the US and the UK, although has improved over the years. In 1970 it was only 58 and 68 in 1990. The main reason for the lower rate is the lack of a good diet and the level of health care available to the poor. Diabetes and heart conditions are a serious problem, and the vast majority of the population cannot afford blood sugar checking kits nor the insulin or medicines necessary to keep diabetes under control. There is also no regular cancer screening programmes and cancer treatment such as radiation therapy or chemotherapy are financially way out of reach of the average person, and cost more than the limits imposed by most insurances.

For those ex pats who find themselves in need of care, it is extremely easy to find a Dominican to provide care either part or full time as this is something they are used to doing. In addition there are some private care facilities, the websites of which are given below.
