Leisure, Entertainment & Sports

Geneva - Leisure, Entertainment & Sports

There is a lot to do in Geneva for leisure – expatriates who begin to love living in Geneva usually start living like the locals – enjoying their weekends pursuing their own leisure activities. Living in a city like Geneva with a picturesque backdrop only means one thing one weekends – the best way to enjoy the city is to get outdoors! Hiking and mountaineering in the warmer months is very popular, and in the winter months, skiing and snowboarding are leisure staples. Cycling and water rafting, and camping in caravans are other leisure pursuits in the warmer months. Water sports, parks and the beach are popular with the locals and expatriates alike. There are a few golf clubs in Geneva for enthusiasts too.

Of particular interest is sailing on Lake Geneva (or Lac de Genève or Lac Leman). This is a must-try for any resident in Geneva. Each year in June, there is an annual yacht event known as the Bol d'Or Mirabaud. If you are interested to learn how to sail or boat, try the Ecole-Club Migros de Genève or the Centre nautique GB waypoint, or Nautisschool. The French word for swimming pools is "piscine". There are a number of swimming pools in Geneva – try Meyrin, Lancy, Carouge and Contrin.

The local tourist office is a good place to start for expatriates wishing to learn more about what's there to do on weekends. In Geneva, the tourist office is located at 18 rue de Mont-Blanc, 1211 Geneva (Tel: 022 909 70 00). The City of Geneva website also has a regularly updated section on leisure activities in Geneva that is worth checking out. An interesting blog that is updated by a number of locals living in Geneva provides interesting places to visit around Geneva – click here to access the site. Lots of photographs and frank reviews of restaurants, cafes and events in and around Geneva.
