Hong Kong - TV
Many of the modern apartment blocks come pre-installed with cable or Satellite Master Antenna (SMATV) which is provided by the management company. Before you order cable services, you should see if your apartment already has it because it’s possible that you might be able to get it for free without ordering it. It is sometimes considered part of the management fees. If you don’t already have satellite or cable in your new apartment, a TV receive-only system (TVRO) will need to be installed. This is a satellite dish and comes with the corresponding equipment necessary for viewing your TV.
Expats can choose between various types of television services in Hong Kong including broadband TV, satellite, and cable. You can also get HDTV through terrestrial free TV and all pay operators.
STAR TV is the main satellite TV provider. Some of their most popular satellite channels include Star Sports, Star World (entertainment), ESPN, Star Movies, Sky News, Fox News, and the National Geographic channel.

Programs are sometimes shown in Korean, Japanese, Mandarin, and Cantonese. ATV world sometimes shows popular shows from the United States and the United Kingdom. While the public service broadcaster Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK) doesn’t have its own television channels, it does offer public affairs programs and these are aired by the three main television channels.
Various prices exist depending on the cable package you are interested in. Hong Kong Cable TV, for instance, has an “expat” package that starts at HK$79 per month and requires a 24 month contract. It offers viewers a lot of channels from around the world. Most of the services require a commitment of at least one year. If you have to terminate services earlier then you might find that you have to pay a large fee to make up for the remainder of your contract.
You can order your services online and a technician will then set a time to come to your home and install your equipment. Monthly bills can be paid online, by post, or by telephone. You can also set up a direct debit account which will withdraw your monthly bill directly from your bank account.
TV sets in Hong Kong work under the PAL system. PAL, NTSC and SECAM, are not compatible with one another.
