Jordan - Employment


An employer is not allowed to employ any foreign workers without prior consent from the Ministry of Labour, according to the labour law. The work permit given to foreigners should not exceed one year and can be extended after the first year. Any employer found to be employing a foreign person without the required work permit will be subject to a fine of between 100-150 Jordanian Dinar for each month that the employee works there without the permit.

Both employers and employees have the right to agree on a probation period but the agreed time is not allowed to exceed three months. This is something that the two parties should negotiate themselves as it is not assumed in the contract of employment.

Either of the two parties is allowed to terminate the contract of employment within the agreed probation period without any liability towards the other party, except for the employee's salaries.

The employer cannot extend the probation period any more than has been agreed upon or terminate the contract and re-employ the same employee for another probation period.

Internal regulations are to be set by any employer who has 10 or more employees working for him/her. These regulations should be set to outline the working hours, rest hours, weekly leave, working hours during Ramadan, sick leave, safety precautions, penalty list and any other details that the employees should know about relating to the nature of the work. The Ministry of Labour should authenticate these internal regulations otherwise they will be invalid and the employer will be liable to pay a fine.

Employees should not be required to work more than eight hours a day or forty hours a week. If the employee chooses to do so, they will be entitled to overtime payments.

To apply for a Jordanian working visa you should have a fully completed visa application form, two passport photos, a valid national visa and one copy, original valid resident visa, confirmation letter from your health insurance stating coverage, proof of accommodation, current bank statements, reference letter from your employer and the visa fees for a Jordanian visa.

Opportunities for casual foreign workers to find work in Jordan are limited. There are possibilities of finding casual English teaching work for those who are willing to hunt for them. Visitors who are fluent in Arabic may find more success in the job market. There are a number of international gas and oil companies which have a presence in Jordan and these are usually the most attractive employment possibilities for skilled expat workers.
