Taking Your Pets

Jordan - Taking Your Pets

There are no set rules for taking pets to Jordan. There are no quarantine regulations and the most you might be requested to do is produce a certificate of good health. However, you should be aware of the regulations that apply if you wish to return to your home country with your pet, and there are certain steps you can take before you leave that will make that process easier.

Having your pet micro chipped is a good idea. This is a process that is relatively inexpensive and enables easy identification of the animal. Once this is done, it is for life and will cover you no matter which country you wish to go to.

Ensuring that your pet has all the relevant vaccinations is also a good idea, if only to reassure yourself that your pet is protected from certain communicable diseases. A comprehensive rabies vaccination will be a requirement no matter which country you have come from. It is also important to ensure that all these vaccinations are kept up to date while you are in Jordan, as it may be that you do not have a lot of notice when it comes time to leave.

If you are travelling with a pet that is clearly unwell then you may not be allowed into Jordan. It is not a good idea to undertake that kind of a journey with a sick animal, though most airlines will not allow the pet to fly with them if that is the case.

There are many veterinarians in Jordan, and it should be relatively easy to find one that speaks English. There are many who have trained and worked in the UK and the US. The standard of veterinary care is excellent. If you are taking a pet with you that requires medication for an existing condition, it is a good idea to check ahead that this medication will be readily available. If it is not then you will have time to discuss alternative medication or supplies with your own vet.

Pet supplies are readily available in Jordan. It may be that the branded pet food that you are used to is not available, but there are local alternatives as well as some imported brands that will do just as well. Supermarkets stock a range of pet foods which will be suitable for most animals, although your local veterinarian may be able to order special foods if your pet has a specific dietary requirement.
