Kuala Lumpur - Overview

Click here to go to this city guide's homepage

Kuala Lumpur (KL) is to Malaysia what Washington DC is to the United States. As the focal point of Malaysia, KL is the capital of Malaysia. While the federal government administrative functions have relocated to Putrajaya, KL is still the major driving force and center of economic and business activity for the region, and the country as a whole.

The city's infrastructure, architecture, employment, services and activities are the most developed in the country, and the rate of economic growth remains the fastest in the country. Situated midway along the east coast of Malaysia at the confluence of the Klang and Gombek rivers, KL's population, both the local and foreign - have grown, and continues to grow rapidly. Many expatriates who relocate to Malaysia are sent to KL, which is home to many multi-national corporations. The total population of Malaysia (as of 2008) is 27.7 million, out of which the estimated population of greater KL (including Klang Valley) is around 7.2 million. Of the 11.2 million in Malaysia's labor force, around 840,000 of them are employed in KL.

While KL's population grows, so does the KL. The land area of KL is around 244 square kilometers (94 square miles). Expatriates relocating to KL will find a good variety of choices to suit different needs and lifestyles. Both single expatriates and expatriates with families will find it easy to slip into a lifestyle that is comfortable and enjoyable.
