There is only one supplier for electricity in Malaysia – the Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB). There are several upgrading works in progress to meet the growth in demand for electricity in KL. The TNB main office is located at No. 129, Jalan Bangsar. You can apply for a utility account by contacting one of the Kedai Tenaga (The Service and Advisory Centers for TNB). In recent years, there is a Peninsular Gas Utilization Project aimed at supplying natural gas to users via pipelines as an alternative source of electricity. The single current user of natural gas in KL is the KLCC. KLCC utilizes gas turbines to generate electricity for its entire development. This project is still very much in its infancy stage, and the natural gas pipeline coverage is currently limited for most residential users. There are extensive plans by the KL City Hall to encourage more new residential / commercial developments to include infrastructure to cater for piped gas supply. Bottled gas is used mainly for cooking (ovens / cookers). Companies supplying bottled gas will drive around housing areas, honking their goods.

The Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (SYABAS) is the supplier of water in KL. It took over from Perbadanan Urus Air Selangor (PUAS). The headquarters is located at Jalan Pantai Baharu, KL. The Toll-free Telephone number is for PUSPEL (the Customer Service Center for all water-related queries) is 1-800-88 5252. Alternatively, you can SMS your queries to 39222 or email to puspel@syabas.com.my. There have been intermittent shortcomings in the quality of water (e.g. low water pressure in hilly areas and older parts of KL city due to aging pipelines).

Indah Water Konsortium (IWK) is Malaysia's national sewerage company responsible for handling sewerage in KL. Waste collection frequency is usually once a week, but the frequency can vary from apartment to apartment, depending on your management committee.


Some serviced apartments include utilities as part of the rent. This is usually the case for single expatriates or expatriates who are living alone, or who are looking for someone to share an apartment with. For expatriates who are renting a house / apartment, the electricity bill may be made in the landlord's name.

Electricity bills are sent out monthly. Bills can be paid at a post office, or at one of the Kedai Tenaga Customer Service Centers. Payments at the Kedai Tenaga can be made via cash, check or credit card. You can also arrange to pay your electricity bills via bank transfer. Water usage is metered, and bills ("Bil Air") are pro-rated based on a 31-day billing period. Depending on your place of residence arrangement, you could be billed either directly by SYABAS, or by the management of the apartment building that you reside in. For more information, click here.
