Overview

El Campello is the embodiment of the sleepy fishing town that characterizes Spain’s Costa Blanca on the South East coast. Despite the town being a slice of ´true Spain´ there are enough services for holidaymakers and expats that alleviate potential isolation and confusion.

The tourist office is located near the railway station, there is a wonderful weekly market every Wednesday morning that offers the expected Spanish range of fruit, vegetables and fresh fish and poultry, as well as an opportunity to practice either your Spanish or, if you are feeling really bold, your Valencian (the regional dialect).


Getting there

El Campello is 25 minutes drive from Alicante airport (or about 40 minutes by transfer coach, which runs regularly up until 11pm each day). A taxi will cost you around 30 Euros for the trip, much less expensive than other European countries, or Spanish metro areas. Alicante train station (the same distance from El Campello) is a central hub for intra-Spanish and international trains from within Europe.


Expats

There is a relatively low number of English-speaking expats living in El Campello. That being said, the expats who do call this city home are generally there because they wish to avoid the ´expat ghettoes´ that exist in the coastal resort towns. If this is the mindset you also have, then the expat network in El Campello is likely to have more in common with you and your family when it comes to learning the language, and generally assimilating into the local culture. Tap into this network if you can.

Schools

There are no international schools in El Campello proper. Because El Campello is part of the Costa Blanca and is situated very close to the larger cities of Alicante and Benidorm, most expats who choose to send their children to international schools make the daily trip to one of the larger towns.


Getting Around

Public transport in El Campello is scarce when compared to other areas in Spain or even on the Costa Blanca. The appealing nature of this relaxed fishing port is its lack of tourists, but this does mean that the accompanying services are also lacking. Although El Campello is easy to see on foot, for a more comfortable daily life it is strongly recommended that you have access to a car.


Settling In

If El Campello is the town of your choice for settling in, you should either be able to speak Spanish or be willing to learn - fast. Unlike other Spanish towns that cater for foreigners, El Campello does not have a high number of English-speakers. Luckily, as it is located in the Valencian region, the local council offers free language lessons to foreigners in a bid to preserve its native dialect. Enquire about these at your local town hall (Ajuntimento). Lessons usually begin when the school year does, around the first of October.


Property

House and apartment prices in El Campello are incredibly reasonable. It is normal in Spain for people to live in apartments (and pets are usually more than welcome) and a four bedroom, two bathroom apartment can be leased for around 750 Euro per month. Be aware that most agents will request between three and six months rent as a security deposit though, so it is advisable to either make sure you have plenty of cash, or strong negotiating skills! You will need to pay a minimum of one month security deposit, with an additional month’s rent to be paid in advance. The good news is that it is customary for you to use your security deposit in lieu of paying your final month’s rent (or three or six months). Just make sure you hold on to the receipt for your original deposit.

When buying a house, prices vary sharply according to the homes location (views cost a lot), but a good guide is around 240,000 Euro for a three bedroom house (house, not apartment) that comes furnished with heat, aircon, a pool and the beach within 5 minutes walk.
