New Zealand - Getting There By Air
Air New Zealand flies from the UK to Auckland with stops in Los Angeles for those travelling westbound and in Hong Kong for those traveling eastbound. Air New Zealand is also at the moment the only airline offing this direct route from the UK. The distance from the UK which ever route you choose is approximately the same, but there may be differences in stop over time that you might want to take into consideration.
Travelling from the UK to New Zealand takes around 25 hours if you go via Asia or around 27 hours via the United States. Flights with additional stops or changeover will increase these flight times greatly. If you are flying from New York to New Zealand you can expect the journey to take around 17 hours and from Los Angeles around 12 hours. These flight times are given for arrivals into Auckland. If you need to transfer to Christchurch then there are flights from Auckland to Christchurch that take around one and a half hours.
Auckland International airport is the main airport in New Zealand for international flights. There are however several other smaller airports around the country that service flights from other countries. The other airports in NewZealand are Hamilton Airport, Wellington Airport, Christchrch Airport, Queenstown Airport, Dunedin Airport and Rotorua Airport, all of which also receive some international flights.
Air New Zealand is the country’s main airline, which is also well known for having generous leg room in its seating areas, even in economy class. Other major airlines operating into New Zealand include Qantas, United Airlines and Singapore Airlines who give you the opportunity on the website to enter your location and the web page will then update to give you the contact telephone number and email address of the office nearest to you. British Airways give you the choice of their US or UK site when looking for contact information. The contact information includes various links depending on your query.
Getting to your final destination from each airport is easy as there are several shuttle buses operating to and from the nearest cities (or large towns depending on the airport). There is also the option of car hire, bus or taxi for the last leg of your journey. Auckland airport is approximately 20km outside of the city so transfer times re relatively short. If you choose to use the services of a taxi then you must make sure it is a properly licenced taxi and the fare is agreed before the journey commences. Taxis will usually charge around $60.00 for the 30 minute trip, although this can be higher during peak times. The bus is a much more cost effective way to travel from the airport and runs 24 hours a day. The journey will cost around $16 dollars one way for an adult and $6 for children. The journey takes around one hour depending on the level of traffic.
All airports have car hire outlets and there are several which are well known across the world such as Budget and Avis.
