Portugal - Aveiro
The district benefits from warm summers and mild winters, which is another reason it is so popular with expats. There is a reasonable amount of rainfall during the winter months.
The district of Aveiro is considered to be one of the best places to retire to. The city of Aveiro and the surrounding towns are fairly quiet areas and have all the amenities that are needed for daily life. The town has good beaches and good transport links to cities such as Lisbon and Porto. The area is a good example of traditional Portuguese life and is perfect for those who want to stay off the beaten track.
If you are considering starting your own business then there are opportunities in the area to buy an existing business or start your own. As the area becomes more popular with tourists there are opportunities for expats to open B&Bs and small hotels, but business will be seasonal. There are opportunities for those who are qualified in areas such as beauty therapy, hairdressing and trades such as plumbing to start their own businesses. Speciality shops which sell foods from around the world are now becoming increasingly popular in the area and may be another option worth considering.
Aveiro University means that there are several areas of the city where rental properties are very reasonably priced and these are good areas to invest in if you are interested in your own business, as the student population grows each year and there is no shortage of tenants. The properties are mainly apartments and are mostly in low rise buildings. Property prices to buy are relatively low around the university.
The city centre district of Aveiro has many apartments available, both to buy and to rent. Some homes are in the art nouveau style and the district is very popular both with older residents and young professionals. There has been much development of the city centre in recent years and many areas are pedestrianised in order to encourage people to use bicycles. There are houses in the area but these do not have large gardens and most only have small courtyards.
The Mercado do Peixe district of the town is centred around the fish market, but this is an area with a lively night life, so is perhaps not for those who are looking for a quiet area to live in. This part of town is home to some of the city’s best restaurants and bars. Properties are a mix of apartments and small houses and property prices are on a par with the regional average.
The city of Esmoriz has three main parts to it. There are the urban, beach and forest sectors, although the largest area is the urban sector. Most of the urban sector is home to middle class people and most of the properties available are apartments, usually in low rise buildings. This might make the city more attractive to those who want to retire to the area, but small businesses traditionally do well in this area, so it may be a good area for those who want to buy or establish their own business. The urban sector is not without its share of green spaces and there are parks and other leisure areas in the city. The homes in the beach sector are aimed at the richer end of the market and are much more luxurious than in other parts of the town. There are several schools to choose from, but it is worth noting that these do not have the best reputation either for their standards of education or their discipline.
