South Africa - Utilities (Electricity, Gas, Water)

Utilities in South Africa are, comparatively speaking, expensive and rates differ based upon the metropolitan jurisdiction you find yourself in. Refuse removal (limited to household waste) usually occurs once a week. Gas is not supplied to houses in South Africa.

Water charges are imposed on a sliding scale based upon the consumption of the household (or single connection) and measured in kiloliters. Bills are issued monthly via post and can be paid at any nearby post office or at the municipality itself.

Similarly, electricity charges are calculated based upon consumption thereof and for a single-phase connection (standard household supply) the charge is 41,83c per kWh in June, July and August (winter, for all intents and purposes) and 37,17c for the remainder of the year. South Africa uses 230V mains electricity.

Note: These charges are a guide only (based upon those used in the Ekurhuleni metro which covers the East Rand area of Gauteng province) and will most likely differ from one metropolitan area to the next. Bills are issued and can be paid in the same manner as above.
