United Kingdom (UK) - Getting There By Rail

It is possible to take the rail system from several European countries into the United Kingdom. The Eurostar is one of the most popular companies offering fast trains through the Channel Tunnel.

National Rail is one of the rail providers within the UK and Europe. Eurostar has agreements with many UK train operators, which enables travellers to find reduced fares and ensure a smooth journey. They offer high-speed trains with a one-cost fare for travel between cities in the UK and on the continent. Regional trains run throughout the United Kingdom with more than 100 departure points. Tickets are easy to buy and can be delivered to a home or business address.

The local station to transfer to the continent is London’s St. Pancras International. These trains take people to many destinations throughout Europe. Expats living in the UK can easily get around the isles and take holidays in mainland Europe. Paris to London on a high speed train will usually take around two and a half hours. There are at least sixteen London-Paris trains throughout the week.

If travellers wish to get to Edinburgh from London by train, it will usually take four to five hours. Paris to Glasgow takes about nine hours Eurostar trains. Skiers travelling from London to Geneva can arrive at their destination in as little as three and a half hours on a high speed train. Travel to Cardiff form London takes about two hours.

Major Train Companies


Eurostar is one of the larger rail lines in the United Kingdom. They have many destinations throughout the various countries as well as on the continent.

Arriva Trains Wales

The main rail company in Wales is Arriva and they offer high speed trains for long journeys. Direct train routes also exist from North to South Wales. Arriva provides signs in Welsh as well as English. They have two airport service trains running hourly to Cardiff Airport from Bridgend and Cardiff Central. These run Monday through to Saturday, with a train on Sunday running every two hours. Manchester and Birmingham International Airport also have train services through Arriva.

Cross Country Trains

This train service operates throughout the North and Midlands of England, Wales and Scotland. If anyone needs a train to or from an airport in these areas they can find Cross Country Trains at Southampton Airport, Birmingham International Airport, Manchester Airport, and London Stansted.

Chiltern Railways

This rail operator runs throughout London to stations that are convenient to tourists and citizens alike. From here it is easy to take in a game at Wembley Arena and visit Paddington or Oxford. There are two main terminals: London Marylebone and Birmingham Snow Hill. People can also take these trains to Stratford-upon-Avon and the rest of Shakespeare’s country.

This is the station that serves international travel from the United Kingdom.

Waverly and Haymarket are the two main railway stations in Edinburgh. They are located in the city centre. They may have to be used in conjunction with a bus to reach some destinations.

Cardiff Central Railway Station and Rhoose Cardiff International Airport are the two main railway stations in Cardiff. There are car parks at both stations that are open twenty-four hours a day.
