United Kingdom (UK) - Sport and Fitness

The United Kingdom has offered the world a number of sports including football, cricket, rugby, golf, tennis, badminton, table tennis, rounders, hockey, boxing, billiards, snooker, sailing, rowing and curling. There are national teams for each sport in Scotland, Wales, England, and Northern Ireland. There are also Olympic teams for each country. In addition to the other sports listed, motorsports and horseracing are also popular. Tennis is perhaps one of the internationally-recognised sports in the UK, given the importance of the Wimbledon Championships.

Popularity of Sports

While there are plenty of sports to watch or take part in, not all are very popular. Football is the most viewed and played sport in the United Kingdom. Gym workouts eclipse football in terms of participation, but not in overall interest. Swimming is also a big sport in terms of popularity, with 9% of people swimming regularly.

Gym Memberships

In the United Kingdom there are plenty of gym memberships available. Many of these locations will have Olympic sized pools along with all the gym equipment one might need for training and muscle tuning. Quite a few have programs in addition to regular workout areas; these programs provide yoga and other classes. England is perhaps the most popular location for gym memberships, particularly in London and other major cities. In Northern Ireland, gyms are less popular and there are fewer options available.

UK Gyms:

24 Hour Gym

British Military Fitness

Nuffield Health

Golfing in the UK

Golfing is very popular in the United Kingdom and there are hundreds of golf courses and clubs spread throughout the country. These clubs often require fees and some may require a club membership. For expats looking to live in the UK it is best to get a membership to a club rather than use public courses.

Guests are accepted at some clubs, however this is determined by the exclusivity of the club itself. Bookings and membership payments can be made at each individual golf club.

There is no licence requirement for golfing in the UK. There are handicap certificates you can obtain if you wish to be recognised in the UK and around the world. For those who wish to play professionally it is definitely a good idea to obtain a handicap certificate, as well as considering a European licence choice like those in Belgium and the Netherlands.

Some popular clubs in the UK include:

Woodhall Spa

This golf club is actually a two course option with Hotchkin Course and Woodhall Spa. It is located in England with heathland fairways and ancient woodlands to enjoy while playing.

Dundonald Links

This is a Kyle Philips golf course in Scotland. It offers plenty of challenges for golfers from around the world.

Trevose is a lot like Royal St. Georges, Royal Lytham, and Royal Birkdale in terms of amazing Cornish golfing, however it is not as well-known as these locations.

Skiing in the UK

The United Kingdom does have some ski resorts, mainly in Scotland where the highest mountains are found. Alpine skiing is possible and there will always be skiers heading to Olympic training on various ski runs throughout the UK. According to the BBC there are 77 ski slopes in Great Britain, with Scotland offering the only natural terrain for skiing.

The Snow Centre

This is located in Hemel Hampstead close to London.

Ski Club of Great Britain

The Ski Club of Great Britain offers a variety of dry and real snow slopes all over the country, including some of the most popular ski resorts.

Glenshee Ski Centre

The Glenshee Centre is for skiing and snowboarding. It offers the most extensive range of slopes and snowboarding facilities.
