United States of America (USA) - Maine

Maine is located in the north eastern part of the United States of America and is the 23rd state of the United States of America. It is bordered by only one other US state, New Hampshire, due to the fact Canada lies to the north of the State and the Atlantic Ocean to the east. It is also the most easterly of all the States. It is popular for its seafood cuisine and beautiful coastline.

Maine is the 39th largest state in terms of area and 41st in terms of population. The most northerly of the collection of states known as New England, Maine attracts many visitors who come to enjoy the scenery and laid back lifestyle that can be found here. The state capital is Augusta although the largest city is Portland. Other major areas include Bangor, Kennebunk and Bar Harbour.

Maine – Employment

Maine is an agricultural state and is a major producer of dairy products and blueberries. There is also a large market for potatoes grown in the region. Employment opportunities in this sector are not many but they do occur. Fishing is another occupation, although this has diminished in recent years. Industries such as timber and paper production have openings for both skilled and unskilled workers, though there are very few large corporations in the state as much of it consists of small towns and rural areas.

The shipbuilding industry is mainly for the US Navy and employs large numbers of workers. There are opportunities for skilled professionals although the ship building industry is not as strong as it once was. Tourism is a major part of the Maine economy and those who enjoy outdoor activities regularly visit the state. Many people move to the state to set up businesses to organise activities for tourists and those who have had previous experience in the industry fare better than those that have not. The state has a much lower unemployment rate than many other states.

Maine – Property

Many of the towns and cities in Maine are fairly small, so do not have the wealth of different districts as those in other states, though Portland is the largest city and attracts those who are looking for work.

Portland is the largest city in Maine and attracts expats each year. The city has everything that you would need, from theatres to shops, but property in the city is quite expensive, particularly when it comes to family homes. Portland is often listed as one of the safest places to live in the US, and regularly ranks highly on the best locations for new businesses. The district of East Deering is home to both private family homes in more exclusive developments and public housing. It is an ideal area for families, while the district of Libbytown is already home to a community of expats. These come from all over the world and are attracted by the slightly lower property prices in the district.

Kennebunk is a popular place for both tourists and residents and the Lower Village district is a popular residential place. However, the number of tourists that come means that during the summer the area is busy. Prices are only slightly above average, mainly due to the demand for available properties, but the cost of living is higher than the national average. Kennebunk has a higher unemployment rate than the rest of the state, but has a good schools system. There are a number of expats already living in the area and the town has a wealth of amenities, from sports facilities to shopping centres.

The town of Bethel is what most people would consider to be a perfect New England town. The properties on offer are mainly single family homes, usually with fairly large gardens. This area is ideal for families that are looking for a more tranquil way of life. This is a small town but it has several private schools and everything that you need for daily life.

Bangor is much cheaper than Portland when it comes to property prices and it has an excellent school system, so is ideal for families. There is also the added benefit of a lower cost of living than in many other areas.
