United States of America (USA) - Oregon

The state of Oregon is located on the Pacific Coast of the US and shares borders with Washington State, California, Nevada and Idaho. The state capital is Salem although it is not the largest city in terms of population. Portland has the highest population in the state with over half a million people living there. Total population for the state is around 3.8 million people with the majority living in Portland.

Many people are attracted to Oregon for the beautiful countryside, though many people make the move there for work reasons. The landscape ranges from the coast to the Cascade Mountain Range, and there are large areas of forests and farmland. The climate is influenced a great deal by the ocean, and is generally mild, although it has been known to experience both very hot summers and very cold winters.

Oregon – Employment

There are several international corporations which have established bases in the state and which employ large numbers of workers. One of the largest employers is the IT company Intel, which employs skilled professionals. There are work opportunities within this company, although very few for those with no qualifications or experience in this field. Other companies in the area include Nike, Northwest Natural Gas and Columbia Sportswear, so the range of corporations that may have openings is varied.

The agriculture industry includes vineyards and hazelnut growing as well as dairy farming and wheat. Work opportunities within agriculture are mainly for seasonal workers. The timber industry is also strong here, due to the large amount of forestation, but it is regulated to prevent over harvesting, so opportunities may also be limited here.

The unemployment rate is relatively high at 10.6%, though this is mainly due to a downturn in construction works and manufacturing in recent years.

Oregon – Property

Portland has the highest population in Oregon and is popular due to the many tranquil districts that it offers. The Cultural district is named so because of the amount of art galleries and other cultural attractions that can be found there. The properties in the area are mainly apartments, although there are some family homes on offer. The area attracts large numbers of visitors and is one of the busiest parts of town, so may not be ideal for those looking for a quiet residential area.

The Hawthorn district is considered to be an ‘alternative’ area with an array of bohemian shops and ethnic eateries. It is a very multi-cultural area and attracts students and artists. Again, the accommodation to be found here is mainly apartments, but the area is reasonably priced. The Lloyd district can be found on the East Side and is both a residential and commercial area. There are many single family homes on offer; both for rent and purchase, and prices are on a par with the city average.

The Nob Hill district is one of the more affluent areas of the city, with large numbers of mansions dating from the late 19th/early 20th century. It is a quiet area and has something for everyone, from art galleries to restaurants. The Pearl district is filled with loft apartments and town houses and has recently been revamped in order to attract a more affluent resident. It has become a very elegant area of the city.

The district of Sunnyslope in the city of Salem is a mainly residential area, with many single family homes and several apartment complexes. This is a relatively quiet area of the city, though it does have all the amenities needed for daily life. Lansing is a district in the north-east part of Salem which is also residential and many residents have with young families. The area consists mainly of single family homes. There is also a small community of expats already resident in Lansing.

The district of Northgate in Salem is largely industrial, although there are some residential streets. This area is not ideal for families as the property choices are limited so is perhaps better suited to young professionals. In contrast, the district of West Salem is largely residential with a variety of accommodation to choose from, either to buy or rent. This district dates back to the 19th century and is a good area for families as there are several schools to choose from.
