Los Angeles - Overview

Los Angeles, California, commonly referred to as L.A., is one of the largest cities in the United States of America. This exciting city is culturally diverse and is a main center for music, film, and fashion. It is also known as a center for business, education, science, and technology, making it a popular city for expats.

This city is home to the famous Hollywood area, which is the hotbed of the United States film, television, and music industry.

Los Angeles, known as "The City of Angels", is situated on the west coast of the United States, in southern California. This large, bustling city is home to expats of many nationalities. As a result, it is estimated that 224 different languages are spoken within its limits.

The City of Angels offers a warm climate and mild, but sometimes rainy, winters and dry summers. You can expect temperatures to range in the 80 to 90 degree range in the summer, with lows in the 60 degree range. In the winter, temperatures usually reach the 60 to 70 degree range, with lows in the 40 to 50 degree range.

Los Angeles was once part of Mexico, and was purchased by the United States after the Mexican-American War.

A recent census found that 46.9 percent of the population was White American, 11.2 percent African American, 10.5 percent Asian American, .8 percent Native American, .2 percent Pacific Islander, 25.7 percent from other races, 5.2 percent from two or more races, and 46.5 percent Hispanic or Latino. 42.2 percent of the population speaks English, 41.7 percent Spanish, 2.4 percent Korean, 2.3 percent Filipino, 1.7 percent Armenian, 1.5 percent Chinese, and 1.3 percent Persian as their first language. The city is also home to ethnic centers, such as Chinatown, Historic Filipinotown, Koreatown, Little Armenia, Little Ethiopia, Tehrangeles, Little India, Little Tokyo, and Thai Town. Such cultural diversity makes Los Angeles an easy city for expats to adapt to.

Because of the number of vehicles on the road and the Los Angeles/Long Beach complex, Los Angeles has heavy pollution in the form of smog. The state of California has passed legislation to help control the problem of pollution. As a result, low emission vehicles are required.

Because California is located on major fault lines, earthquakes are common in Los Angeles. The city has approximately 10,000 earthquakes ever year. However, most of the earthquakes are low in intensity and are not even felt.

Los Angeles is a city of cultural diversity, making it easy for expats to acclimate and feel comfortable. It continues to attract expats from all areas and cultures.
