Los Angeles - Utilities (Electricity, Gas, Water, Household Waste)

When you rent an apartment in Los Angeles, keep in mind that utilities are most often not included in the rental price. You will be responsible for establishing your own electrical, gas, and water service. You must contact the utility providers to set up accounts, and you may be required to pay a deposit if you have not had utility service in the United States before.

Electricity service in Los Angeles is heavily regulated by the Los Angeles Authorities. Despite recent efforts to introduce greater choice to the city’s residential electric service market, the Los Angeles Department of Water and power provides the majority of service in the metro area.

You can complete the online "Turn On Service Request" form, available at www.ladwp.com, to begin the process of establishing electric and water service for your apartment or home. The LADWP website also allows you to manage your account, pay bills, and terminate service online.

If applying online, you will need to allow at least two business days from the application date for LADWP to begin your service. If you need to establish electric and water service faster, call 1-800-DIAL-DWP.

There are a few natural gas providers available in the Los Angeles area. If your apartment or home is heated by natural gas, you will need to establish an account separately from your electricity ad water service accounts. To find natural gas providers in your area, go to www.losangelesutilities.com.

Waste collection in Los Angeles is largely handled by the Los Angeles Department of Public Works. The open market system for waste collection in Los Angeles is being replaced by LADPW franchises to provide uniform standards for trash collection and disposal.
