Indonesia – Recommended Blogs

At Expat Focus, we like to be on the lookout for resources around the web that could help prospective expats adjust to their new countries. Today, we’re taking a look at Indonesia and some of the blogs that might be useful for expats there.Life In Big Tent

Lithuanian Ria named her blog after a joke about her home in Kasongan, Yogakarta, by her mum that this Indonesian home her daughter was living in looked just like a big tent. Having won a scholarship to study the language and culture of Indonesia it is unsurprising that she has a blog filled with useful information from what to bring with you to how to blend in and how you know ‘you’ve been in Indonesia for too long’. Philosophical as ever, Ria regards the world as one ‘big tent’ where we all live together under the same moon and stars, something expats can all relate to.

How To Escape

Originally from the Northeast of England, Rachel met her Balinese future husband in 2009 on a solo trip around the world. A marriage and two children later, she now calls Bali home. What started as a way to update family and friends on her progress has become a useful resource for any expat wanting to make a move to Indonesia. There is also plenty of advice for those wishing to get away from a 9-5 work life and find a balance between two very different countries and cultures.

Jakarta News

British born Luke has been blogging about his life in Jakarta since 2009. As an English teacher with an Indonesian wife, he is well placed to share his opinions and observations about expat life; any prospective teachers will be able to get the real lowdown from his entertaining posts. Since the addition of a son to the family life is a lot busier and runs on a lot less sleep, but this new addition means the blog also holds a wealth of information for families too.

A blog recording the life of an expat family in Jakarta, which records all the day-to-day treats and tests that happen when exploring a new country. For any parents (or prospective parents), she has extensive advice and reviews on paediatricians, hospitals and travelling with children. Her post on ‘things no one told me about Jakarta’ is an eye opener and a must read for anyone considering an expat assignment there. Honest and straight to the point, Mummynista doesn’t pull any punches when talking about her life in Indonesia.

Teaching. Traveling. Writing.

Although a very recent repatriate to her native Michigan, Michelle accepted her first teaching position in Indonesia when she had recently graduated college. Her aim was to write diligently, to share her struggles and triumphs as she worked towards becoming a better teacher, writer and world traveler. Her posts about expat life are thoughtful and well written, and will definitely resonate with any current expats. With an interest in photography it’s unsurprising that her blog is filled with candid shots of life and travels and they make a great accompaniment to her varied content.

We’re always on the lookout for more sites to feature – if you run a blog about living in Indonesia, leave us a link in the comments and we’ll take a look!
