Malta – Importing a Pet

Malta is a pet-friendly country, and it allows the import of pets. However, there are certain regulations and requirements that must be followed to bring your pet to Malta.

Importing Pets into Malta

Malta has specific restrictions on the types of pets that can be imported into the country. Only dogs, cats, and ferrets are allowed to enter Malta as pets. Other types of animals, including rabbits, birds, reptiles, and rodents, are not allowed.

Vaccination Requirements

To enter Malta, pets must be vaccinated against rabies. The vaccination must be given at least 21 days before the travel date, and it must be valid for the entire period of the stay in Malta. Pets must also be treated for internal and external parasites before entering Malta.

Application Procedure

To bring your pet to Malta, you must complete several steps before arrival. You must first obtain a pet passport or a third-country official veterinary certificate, which contains all the relevant information about your pet, including vaccinations, treatments, and identification.

After obtaining the necessary documents, you must notify the Maltese authorities at least 24 hours before your pet’s arrival. You can do this by filling out an online form or sending an email to the animal health authorities in Malta.

Quarantine Requirements

Malta does not require pets to undergo quarantine upon arrival. However, if your pet does not meet the necessary requirements, it may be placed in quarantine at your expense.

International Travel Schemes

Malta is a member of the European Union, which means that pets from other EU countries can travel to Malta without quarantine if they meet the necessary requirements. Malta is also part of the PETS scheme, which allows pets from certain non-EU countries to enter Malta without quarantine.

Licensing

Pet owners do not need to obtain a license for their pets in Malta. However, pet owners must ensure that their pets are microchipped and registered with the relevant authorities.

Government Website

The Malta Government’s Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Animal Rights provides useful information on moving pets to Malta. The website contains information on the import regulations, required documentation, and contact information for the Maltese animal health authorities.
