Where, when and why did you move abroad?
I moved to Brunei Darussalam in 2024 for work opportunities and to experience a different lifestyle and culture. I was attracted by the peaceful environment, friendly community, and slower pace of life compared to bigger cities.
What challenges did you face during the move?
One of the biggest challenges was adapting to a new environment and understanding the local lifestyle. Simple things like transportation, food choices, and daily routines took some time to get used to. Being away from family and friends was also emotionally challenging in the beginning.
What do you enjoy most about life in your new country?
What I enjoy most is the safety, peaceful atmosphere, and kindness of the people. Brunei is very calm and relaxing, with beautiful mosques, nature, and less traffic compared to many other countries. I also enjoy learning about the local culture and trying traditional food.
What is the hardest part of expat life for you / your family?
The hardest part is missing family gatherings and special occasions back home. Sometimes communication styles and cultural differences can also take time to understand. For families, adapting children to a new school or environment can be another challenge.
What is your relationship like with locals and other expats?
The locals are generally very welcoming, polite, and helpful. I have had many positive experiences meeting Bruneians and learning more about their culture. The expat community is also supportive, and it is easy to connect with people from different backgrounds who share similar experiences.
What advice would you give to someone thinking of making a similar move?
Be open-minded and patient when adapting to a new country. Take time to learn about the local culture and respect local customs. Try to build friendships with both locals and fellow expats, as this makes the experience much more enjoyable. Most importantly, embrace the experience with a positive attitude because living abroad can be a very rewarding journey.
