Bahrain – Disability

Bahrain is a small island country located in the Persian Gulf. The country has made significant progress in recent years in promoting the rights of people with disabilities. However, there is still much work to be done to ensure that people with disabilities have equal access to education, employment, and public services.

Attitudes towards disability

In Bahrain, people with disabilities are often viewed with pity and seen as a burden on society. This attitude can make it difficult for people with disabilities to participate fully in society and can lead to discrimination and exclusion. However, there is also a growing awareness of the abilities and potential of people with disabilities, and many organizations are working to change the way people view disability.

Discrimination and legislation

The Bahraini government has taken steps to promote the rights of people with disabilities. The country ratified the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in 2010 and has introduced a number of laws and policies to protect the rights of people with disabilities.

However, discrimination still exists, particularly in the areas of education and employment. Children with disabilities may face barriers to accessing education, and adults with disabilities may struggle to find employment. There is also a lack of accessibility in public spaces, including buildings and transportation.

Access to public transport and buildings

Public transport in Bahrain is generally accessible to people with disabilities. Buses and taxis are required by law to be accessible, and the Bahraini government has also introduced a number of initiatives to improve accessibility in public spaces. However, there is still much work to be done to ensure that all public spaces are fully accessible to people with disabilities.

Advocacy groups

There are a number of organizations in Bahrain that work to promote the rights of people with disabilities. These include:
