Who are you?

Reeva Cutting.

Where, when and why did you move abroad?

First I moved from South Africa to England after I finished university. I had no idea what sort of job I would be able to find when I finished my degree. I was able to get a visa for the UK so I moved to England where a lot of my family already moved.

I met my husband shortly after I arrived and we’ve been together ever since. In 2011, our perspective on life in the UK changed after having our first child. So we decided to look at moving to Australia as we wanted to live somewhere sunny and warm where our son could have a very different childhood and future opportunities.

What challenges did you face during the move?

The stress of not knowing if we would get our visa was nerve-wracking! Once we were here, it was hard work finding employment and a place to live.

Are there many other expats in your area?

Tons! I’m surrounded by Brits and South Africans. It’s pretty hard to find people who are actually from Perth – most of the Australians here are even from the east coast.

What do you like about life where you are?

The warm sun, the gorgeous beaches and all the local vineyards!

What do you dislike about your expat life?

Like most people, it’s being so far away from friends and family. Also the TV is really really bad in Australia – thank goodness for NetFlix!

What is the biggest cultural difference you have experienced between your new country and life back home?

Culturally South Africa is really similar to Australia so I haven’t noticed any massive differences. There are more differences with the UK though, mostly related to outdoor activities, food and the outdoor lifestyle.

What advice would you give to anyone following in your footsteps?

If you have your heart set on Australia, just do it! With the right attitude you can make it work.

What are your plans for the future?

Living in Perth for as long as possible – no more international moves if I can help it!
