Hong Kong - Gas

When it comes to setting up your gas services, Towngas serves more than 85% of Hong Kong and its territories. Town gas and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) are the main kinds of gas fuel that are used in Hong Kong for domestic, commercial and industrial purposes. Taxis and more than half of the light buses use LPG as a fuel while natural gas is used for electricity generation and production of town gas. There are around 2.3 million gas customers in Hong Kong with town gas accounting for 84.7% of fuel gas used.

Accounts may be opened online. Once you have registered, the company will call you for confirmation. You can also go to your closest customer service center to register and open and account if you would prefer. You should have a copy of your lease, Hong Kong ID or passport, and a proof of address. When you register for an account, the latest meter reading is needed if your gas is already connected. This meter reading will be your account’s initial reading.

A deposit must be made when you open a new account. Deposit amounts are HK$300 for those residents who live in a public housing estate and HK$600 for those who live in private housing. When you register, you will receive the current Terms and Conditions a technician will be scheduled to visit your home to connect the gas supply if it isn’t already hooked up.

Towngas charges their customers per unit of megajoules (MJ) consumed. To calculate the gas consumption, the units registered by the gas meter are multiplied by 48 MJ which is the heat value. For the first 500 MJ, the rate is 21.90 cents per MJ. For the next 2,000 MJ, the rate is 21.80 cents per MJ. The more megajoules you consume, the lower the price per MJ is. There are lower rates available for those under concession schemes for the elderly, those with disabilities and single-parent families.

The initial monthly gas charge is HK$20. If the actual gas charge that you consume is less than the initial charge then the fee will be levied. There is also a monthly maintenance charge of HK$9.50. This fee covers the cost of having registered gas technicians oversee the maintenance and repair, on-demand inspections and a regular safety inspection on customers' home gas appliances, gas installation pipes and external gas pipes. A 24 hour emergency customer hotline is available for all customers of Towngas in Hong Kong.

Meter readers come out often but you can also do self-meter reading as well. Each month, you can read your own meter and fill out an online form or call in the reading by using a voice recognition system. This can help ensure that your bill is reflecting your actual gas consumption. A bill will be sent to you each month and you can pay it by check, telephone, or online. You can also pay your Towngas bill at a customer service center, bank, or post office.

The rest of Hong Kong’s gas supply falls under Shell Gas LPG. Procedures for setting up an account with them are similar to setting up an account with Towngas. Your building management should be able to inform you which company your gas is registered with.
