Aurora Procopio, Ireland

Who are you?

Hello everyone! My name is Aurora, and I am originally from Rome.

I like to think about my life as an adventure and if it gets boring, I do everything to mess it up! I enjoy wise and long chats in front of a good glass of red wine, I am a great listener and I try my best to give the perfect advice in any situation.I love travelling, help people in need and write stories about them! I started blogging in Italian, but I wanted to share widely my experience, so now I write also in English!

Where, when and why did you move abroad?
I moved to Dublin in 2008 but it wasn’t the first time for me I was moving abroad. In 2003 I moved to Barcelona to learn Spanish during summer time.

What challenges did you face during the move?

I had to find a job and that was for me the biggest challenge that I faced when I moved to Ireland.

My English wasn’t good back at that time, so I attended English courses in order to improve my knowledge of the language.

Are there many other expats in your area?

So many expats live in my area. I don’t know all of them, but I can easily spot them now!

What do you like about life where you are?

Living in a multi-ethnic city is what I like the best of my life here in Dublin. I never know who I am going to meet next and from where. It’s like tasting different dishes, talking different languages all the time!

What do you dislike about your expat life?

Living abroad means living away from your family and from people that have known you since you were a baby. Although I love my life here in Dublin, a big piece of my life seems to be missing.

What is the biggest cultural difference you have experienced between
your new country and life back home?

There are many cultural differences that I have been experiencing since I live in Ireland.

One of the biggest is not having my friends over for a coffee; likewise, I used to visit them and have a coffee in their houses. Here, it doesn’t work like that. In fact if you want to meet a friend you go to the pub and instead of a coffee, you get a pint!

Believe me, I like drinking beer, but at the same time, I do miss having that coffee!

What advice would you give to anyone following in your footsteps?

Believe in what you do, don’t give up when the first difficulty comes up. Make all your efforts to make it work and overcome your comfort zone. Think as your life is an adventure and have loads of fun. Do not ever forget that!

What are your plans for the future?

My plans for the future can take different paths.

At the moment I really enjoying writing my blog and I would like to keep working on this. Ireland is today, my future can be anywhere in the world, but for sure, it will be always next to my daughter.
