Mike Rose, Prachuap Khiri Khan

My name is Mike Rose and I am a retired teacher from the UK.

I moved to Prachuap Khiri Khan, Thailand in January 2008 when I took early retirement. I have always enjoyed travelling and had been to Thailand on a few occasions before deciding to settle here.

I had actually intended to work out here part time teaching English, but when I arrived the job wasn’t there. So I had a hurried change of plan settling instead for full time retirement and living on my private pensions. Thailand is full of red tape but once you know the ropes its easy to negotiate. Find out what to do is the hardest but there are plenty of resources on the Internet. Visa regulations are quite relaxed but you have to report every 90 days to immigration, which is a pain along with your annual renewal. How did you find somewhere to live?

Well the job I was originally offered was in Prachuap Khiri Khan. I hadn’t been here before but immediately liked the area so I decided to stay. Out here finding a place to live is easy so after a few days in a hotel I moved to a longer term rental apartment. I then spent a few weeks looking for somewhere to buy, well lease actually since foreigners can’t own land in Thailand. I eventually found something brand new in my budget range and took out a 30 year lease on a brand three bedroomed bungalow with all mod-cons. It cost me around £20,000 and should see me out 😉

Are there many other expats in your area?

Not many, I prefer this, I didn’t move here to live near folk from the UK/US or wherever. I am fairly independent and it would not suit everyone.

What is your relationship like with the locals?

Very good, they are friendly and helpful. At first it was hard, because we didn’t understand each other but I now have rudimentary Thai(difficult) and have learned to smile broadly things are fine. I also have a Thai partner so that helps too.

What do you like about life where you are?

Great climate but can be very hot. Relatively low prices compared to the UK for most things. Friendly folk. I live two miles from a beautiful beach, the foods great and cheap too. I like the Thai culture and Buddhism too. I also enjoy wildlife watching and the opportunities are endless.

What do you dislike about your expat life?

Not that much. I suppose I would like a more in depth conversation in English occasionally, a decent pint of English real ale and Forest to get promoted to the Premier League so I can see them play on my satellite link.

What advice would you give to anyone following in your footsteps?

Visit the country several times before you decide to move. Its large and diverse.

What are your plans for the future?

Hopefully to see out my lease! But really I don’t have any. The Thais have a phrase “Mia Pen Rai” which basically means if it happens it happens and that sums my future plans up pretty well.

One hobby I have developed in Thailand is blogging, which I really enjoy. You can read about all my exploits here at www.thailand-blogs.com.
