Christmas, Columnists, And New Year’s Resolutions

It’s that time of year again: today the days begin getting longer as people all around the world celebrate the winter solstice. This also means that Christmas is nearly upon us, which can be a difficult time for those living away from home. If you’re living in a city, you’ll probably be able to find plenty of ways to keep busy; here’s a guide for new expats in London at Christmas.

Once the indulgences of Christmas are done, many of us start making resolutions for the coming year. If you’re planning to do that, we have some inspiration to get you started. We have two new columnists to introduce to you this week: Ben Zabulis, a self-confessed ‘accidental expat’ who talks about his life in Hong Kong in his first column; and Chuck Bolotin, who recently conducted a survey of expats in Mexico and writes for us about the results.

We have some round-ups of news for you; here are some general items that may be of interest to expats worldwide, and here’s a round-up of international health news. Finally, here’s all the international finance news of current relevance to expats.

We also have a couple of useful guides for you: if you’re moving to Rotterdam with children, here’s what you can expect from the international schools there; and here’s an overview of taxes in Italy so you can make sure you’re prepared before you arrive.

We spoke to a couple of people this week about their experiences of life abroad: Simon, who has lived in China and Bulgaria; and Kris, a Canadian expat in Australia.
