Who are you?

Fran Cormack

Where, when and why did you move abroad?

In 2012 I decided I wanted to spend even more time in Australia.Holidays to this beautiful country just weren’t scratching the itch. My visa eventually came through on a cold winter’s morning, which brought a big smile to my face.

What challenges did you face during the move?

The biggest challenge was definitely the mountain of paperwork involved with securing my permanent resident visa. This took two years in total and I did it all before the big move.

Are there many other expats in your area?

Yes, lots. Of all nationalities. Australia is obviously a big draw for lots of people.

What do you like about life where you are?

It’s a lot warmer than England. And much of my free time is spent outdoors. There is a lot to explore with a country this size.

I also love the cafe culture. Weekend brunch is a highlight. The cafes can get very creative with their menus.

What do you dislike about your expat life?

With regards to Australia, I dislike being so far from everywhere else. One thing I miss a lot about where I used to live is the proximity to the rest of Europe, and the amazing culture I had on my doorstep.

What is the biggest cultural difference you have experienced between your new country and life back home?

For me it is the sports. Coming from football obsessed Europe, it is strange that football hardly warrants a mention in Australia. I miss the weekly banter through the football season. And going for a pint with mates to watch the games.

What do you think of the food and drink in your new country? What are your particular likes or dislikes?

The food and drink is probably amongst some of the world’s best. I’m not sure there is much to dislike. And the variety is outstanding.

What advice would you give to anyone following in your footsteps?

Stop thinking, and start doing. Life passes you by quick. I celebrate my 5 year anniversary shortly and I’m not sure where that time has gone.

What are your plans for the future?

Not really sure. I only take one year at a time. Although I would like to try expat life in another country, maybe Canada, so if anybody has any advice, I would love to hear it.
